1836 – The Battle of San Jacinto: Republic of Texas forces under Sam Houston defeat troops under Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna.

1856 – Australian labour movement: Stonemasons and building workers on building sites around Melbourne march from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an Eight-hour day. Their direct action protest was a success, and they are noted as being among the first organised workers in the world to achieve an 8 hour day, with no loss of pay.

1863, Union Colonel Abel Streight begins a raid into northern Alabama and Georgia with the goal of cutting the Western and Atlantic Railroad between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Atlanta. The raid ended when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest captured Streight’s entire command near Rome, Georgia.

1894 – Norway formally adopts the Krag-Jørgensen bolt-action rifle as the main arm of its armed forces, a weapon that would remain in service for almost 50 years.

1895, Woodville Latham and his sons, Otway and Gray, demonstrate their “Panopticon,” the first movie projector developed in the United States.

1898 – Spanish–American War: The United States Navy begins a blockade of Cuban ports. When the U.S. Congress issued a declaration of war on April 25, it declared that a state of war had existed from this date.

1918 – German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, better known as “The Red Baron”, is killed and shot down at Morlancourt Ridge, nearVaux-sur-Somme.

Flying his Fokker DR.I Dreidecker, serial number 425/17, von Richthofen was in pursuit of a Sopwith Camel flown by Lieutenant Wilfred May, RAF, when he was attacked by a second Sopwith Camel piloted by Captain Arthur Roy Brown. The Red Baron was wounded in the chest and made a landing near Vaux-sur-Somme, France. He was still alive when he was reached by Australian infantry, but died almost immediately. He was buried with full military honors by No. 3 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps.

15–21 April 1928: Carl Benjamin (“Ben”) Eielson and George Hubert Wilkins, MC and Bar, flew from Point Barrow on the northern coast of Alaska across the Arctic Ocean to Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway. The distance was approximately 2,200 miles ( 3,540 kilometers). The crossing took approximately 20 hours, and was the first Arctic crossing by air. Their airplane was a Lockheed Vega, civil registration NX3903.

  В эти годы неузнаваемо изменился и Московско-Нарвский район Ленинграда: реконструкция крупнейших предприятий, производство тракторов на Путиловском заводе, работа комбината „Красный треугольник“, строительство Дома Советов, Дворца культуры…

 В Ленинграде строят ряд фабрик-кухонь: Выборгская, Невская, Василеостровская и Московско-Нарвская.

 Последняя построена по проекту арх. А.К. Барутчева, И.А. Гильтера, И.А. Меерзона и Я.О. Рубанчика в центре Московско-Нарвской заставы, у Нарвских ворот, принята в эксплуатацию в 1929 г. 21-го апреля 1931 г. в здании был открыт Московско-Нарвский универмаг, входящий в Моснарврабкооп системы ЛСПО. Потребительская кооперация была очень мощной и сильной.

Московско-Нарвский универмаг был скромным магазином, он занимал 2 этажа здания.

1953, Roy Cohn and David Schine, two of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s chief aides, return to the United States after a controversial investigation of United States Information Service (USIS) posts in Europe. Upon their recommendation, thousands of books were removed from USIS libraries in several Western European countries.

The irony of the situation did not escape commentators of the time. With the Nazi book burnings still fresh in the collective memory, many felt it was questionable that America had joined the ranks of nations that censored literature. In the fight against communism, even Moby Dick was dispensable.
